As a last resort, Zelda was able to place the gravely wounded Link in the Shrine of Resurrection and use her awoken sealing powers to trap herself with Ganon in Hyrule Castle. As Link sets off on his quest to defeat Ganon, he is asked to investigate the fate of the Divine Beasts and their former Champions. His ultimate goal, however, remains to reach the Calamity and free the trapped Zelda before the whole world is laid to waste. But with the entire Kingdom of Hyrule before him to explore, it is up to Link himself to decide how he wishes to fulfill his foretold role as the Hylian Champion. Breath of the Wild features a vast open world for Link to explore. Most of Hyrule's scenery is accessible by walking, paragliding or climbing. While the game still includes barriers such as weather effects, inhospitable environments or strong enemies , many of these can be overcome by using Food, effective weapons and armor or finding alternate routes. The world also includes an elaborate physics system which allows for creative interactions e. Unlike many previous Zelda games, Breath of the Wild does not enforce a specific order in which quests or dungeons have to be solved, with the exception of completing the starting tasks on the Great Plateau. It is possible to challenge Ganon right after leaving the starting area, though the game does encourage exploration in order to solve Ancient Shrines and thus gaining additional Hearts or Stamina , find useful and powerful equipment, and defeat the game's own version of dungeons, the Divine Beasts. Additionally, many of the game's puzzles can also be solved in various different ways, often rewarding Link for creative solutions.Link's controls in Breath of the Wild are reminiscent of previous 3D Zelda games. However, the game is the first to require manual jumps as opposed to auto-jumping over small gaps which was introduced with Ocarina of Time and a long-time staple of The Legend of Zelda series.A new feature introduced with Breath of the Wild is Cooking, which enables the creation of Food that recovers Hearts and bestows various effects on Link. Meals are cooked by broiling up to five edible Materials at cooking pots, such as meat, berries, fruits or herbs.Elixirs can be mixed by including monster parts in various recipes. Link can equip a vast variety of different Equipment in Breath of the Wild , including Weapons, Bows and Arrows, Shields, and Armor, allowing for adaptation to the ever-changing environment of Hyrule and tactics used by different enemies.Notably, almost all Weapons, Bows, and Shields found in the game will break after a certain amount of hits. This new Durability system often forces Link to use Equipment salvaged from enemies, even weak ones, instead of just wielding the best Sword available in the game. Equipment that has not been used at all, and thus has sustained no damage, is indicated by a sparkle on the top-right corner of its icon in the Inventory screen. An Equipment that is close to breaking will have a flashing red icon, and a brief notification will appear whenever it is taken out. These abilities allow Link to manipulate the environment by lifting magnetic objects, freezing objects and later enemies in time, creating blocks of ice on water surfaces, and summoning bombs.Other Runes, such as the Camera Rune, can also be found. Together with climbing and paragliding, these abilities are used throughout the rest of the game and for the very most part sufficient to solve puzzles and access most of Hyrule. As a consequence, the game does not feature traditional dungeon items that grant abilities to Link. Eiji Aonuma stated that the game intended to challenge what was expected of The Legend of Zelda franchise, such as having to complete dungeons in a specific order. The game was already expected to have a long development time, so Nintendo released The Wind Waker HD for the Wii U to decrease the gap between releases.During the Game Awards , Miyamoto and Aonuma showcased another gameplay video. It demonstrated the scale of Hyrule, which was designed with the open world concept of the original The Legend of Zelda in mind.Features to be used on the Wii U gamepad were also shown during these videos, which were later removed during development, when the game was ported to Nintendo Switch. The game's original release was intended for , but as new ideas were implemented during development, the release date was pushed forward several times.During E3 , the game's first playable demo was made available for visitors. It featured the Great Plateau area and showed many new elements of the game, such as dodging, the creation of Food by collecting Materials, the use of enemy Weapons, the return of the Stamina Gauge, new mini-Dungeons called Ancient Shrines and the Sheikah Slate.Nintendo revealed the final March release date of Breath of the Wild during the Nintendo Switch presentation in January Breath of the Wild was released simultaneously worldwide for the Wii U and as a Nintendo Switch launch title on March 3, Various special and limited editions for the Switch version of Breath of the Wild were released worldwide. This edition featured the game, a page explorer's guide, and a two-sided map. Several retailers offered bonus items for pre-ordering the game.In GameStop retailers, a poster featuring the game's cover artwork was included. The plot of Breath of the Wild directly refers to events that take place 10, years and years prior to the game's setting. But while Miyamoto is throwing Zelda fans a graphical curveball, he has wisely left the classic gameplay intact, choosing only to add compelling new aspects to the established system. If you've played Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask on the Nintendo 64, you'll know exactly what to do here. This pint-sized Link runs, auto-jumps, climbs and fights just like his N64 forerunner. You still lock-on to enemies and assign subweapons and items such as the hookshot or boomerang to various buttons see the big screen to the right for a closer look. Link does have some nifty new moves as well, including a Solid Snake-style wall shimmy, rope-swinging skills and the ability to pick up enemies' weapons.Link's new stealth moves came into play in one of the demo's levels, in which he explores the "Island of the Mystical Beast," a heavily guarded fortress. Hiding in the shadows, edging along walls and crawling through ducts help avoid capture here. Giant searchlights sweep through the area, and Link can even hide inside a barrel to elude the nasty patrolling Moblins. It's this kind of intense gameplay that eliminated any concern over Zelda's challenge being scaled back to match the new kiddie look.Another playable area featured a colossal centipede living in a pool of molten lava. While it was tempting to just stand and stare in slack-jawed amazement at this beast and its writhing animations, we found that fighting the monstrosity was actually the highlight of Zelda demo. Link's meager sword was no match for the critter's armored skin; we needed a little ingenuity to prevail. With Link's hookshot and a careful aim, we swung over the fiery pit and loosened a large boulder looming overhead. Three of these swings brought the rocks tumbling down onto the monster, weakening it enough for our sword to hurt it.And there ya go: a perfect Zelda boss battle--challenging, innovative and breathtaking. So, now that you've seen the amazing new graphics and experienced the solid game-play, what else about Zelda could surprise you? The plot. The game's official tagline, "The Legend is Reborn," is right on.As the game opens, Link celebrates his 12th birthday with his grandmother and sister in their quaint fishing town. Grandma gives him his trademark green duds, while Arril, his sis, presents him with a nifty telescope. He looks skyward and spies a huge, evillooking bird being attacked by a nearby pirate ship. The frazzled bird drops a mysterious girl into the forest and Link investigates. Just as he reaches her, however, the bird swoops down and snatches Arril with its talons. With a sword in hand and a damsel in distress, Link's adventure has begun. We like the intro and new characters, but questions fill our heads. Where is Princess Zelda? What about series boss Ganon? Is this world even Hyrule? Sadly, Miyamoto isn't talking about the storyline. All we got out of him was a sly, elfin smile. When Nintendo announced their decision to use cel-shading for the next Zelda, there were few initially who were enthused about the idea to say the least.Reducing Link from the realistic, highly detailed action hero many were hoping for, to essentially a goony looking cartoon didn't sit well with many die hard Zelda fans, including me. I however, have been converted as Nintendo's risk has paid off significantly with another fantastic Zelda game. Set a hundred years after Ocarina of Time, Link's adventure starts off simple enough with a birthday gift from his grandmother.Things quickly turn sour however as his sister is kidnapped and he finds himself traveling across immense oceans as he tries to rescue her. Similar in many ways to Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker continues to build off the past success with numerous islands to explore, dungeons to get through, and obstacles to overcome. In addition, everything is pulled together with a solid story line that builds off of Link's past adventures. There are areas that may cause some disappointment however as many will find the bosses at the end of each level to be less than challenging. Most can be beaten easily and require little thought to get through. Another issue is the graphics. Personally, I expected to be unsatisfied with the cel-shading but was amazed at the textures and detail that is possible with this type of graphics design. Some still may have a difficult time accepting the goony looking Link but I'd at least wait to pass judgment until you see it for yourself. Zelda: Wind Waker easily makes its mark as one of the best GameCube games to date. With exceptional gameplay many have come to expect from the Zelda, Nintendo once again successfully rejuvenates one of its older franchises on the GameCube. There are two kinds of people in this world--those who think Zelda's radical, new toon-shaded style is a brilliant move, and those who think its bug-eyed characters belong in cheesy 'zos-era cartoons, not in a videogame for adults. But we have news for any of you who place yourself firmly in that second camp: Experience this game firsthand and you just might change your mind. Once you see how enemy faces lock into a grimace as they take a hit, how fire dances on a torch, how defeated enemies explode into a whirling vortex of clouds and streaking smoke, it's a lot easier to understand why Nintendo made the choice they did.The animation in this game is without equal; as a result, all three of our reviewers one of whom was previously on the fence regarding the graphics and another who was sure the change was a mistake now agree that The Wind Waker's new look is as effective as it is unique. In fact, the more realistic, adult Link featured in Soul Caliburll see the, uh, form-fitting pic top right now looks pretty ridiculous to most of us.Less discussed but ultimately more important is, of course, the gameplay. Although the controls and basic setup follow the expected Zelda mold puzzle-packed dungeons, giant bosses, music-based magic, etc. Link will find several items with multiple ingenious uses--for example, a giant leaf that can work as a big fan or as a parachute, and a grappling hook that can pull Link up or steal items from enemies.Combat has also been tweaked, with the ability to use enemy weapons which also factors into some dungeon puzzles and new special attacks.
