Downloaded excel file but formulas not working

If I copy a value that has been generated by a formula in Excel and paste into a different cell and then try to convert the value in the cell to appear as a formula by using the available methods, it does not work. I am using Microsoft on Windows I have tried various ways to do this and I checked that automatic calculation is selected but Excel still will not show the formula in the pasted cell.

I think this is a bug in the program and would like to know if Microsoft is trying to fix it. Any comments would be appreciated. View best response. If you select a cell that contains a formula and perhaps is formatted in a particular way, you can copy the cell and just paste it into another one.

Both the formula and the format will be pasted. Use Copy and Paste Special, Formulas if you only want to paste the formula. If this doesn't make any sense to you, please describe the exact steps you are taking that lead to the problem.

Thanks for responding to my request for help. The procedure that you describe for pasting a formula does not work for me. I will describe the exact procedure that I use. In my Excel file I have a sheet that contains many formulas.

I want to copy one or more formula to a blank cell and make it appear as a formula. So, I select the cell containing the formula. I use Control-C to copy. I select a blank cell and right click. This brings up a menu containing Paste Special, which brings up the Paste Special menu. It is formatted as text; when the cells are formatted as text excel cannot read numbers and return the result for your applied formula.

Change the format of the cells to General or Convert to Numbers. Often in excel, when we are working in a hurry, we tend to type keys that are not required, and it is an accidental incident. To begin, select the formula tab, then formula auditing, and finally show formulas. In addition, there is a keyboard shortcut for it. If you have typed this key accidentally, we may the result like the below picture. The solution is to try typing the same key again to get back the results of the formula rather than the formula itself.

Sometimes in Excel, we see different numbers, but the formula shows different results. The below image shows one such situation. In cell D1, D2, and D3, we have 10 as the value. For example, if you enclose numeric values in double quotes in your formulas, Excel assumes you want to output a text string rather than a number.

But the problem is the returned 1's and 0's are text values , not numbers! And if you reference any cells with the above formula in other formulas, those cells won't be included in calculations. As soon as you remove "" surrounding 1 and 0 in the above formula, Excel will treat the outputs as numbers and they will be calculated correctly. If the small green triangles do not appear in cells for some other reason, look at the Number Format box on the Home tab in the Number group. If it displays Text , try clearing all formatting for the problematic cells, and set the cells' format to Number or General.

If that doesn't work, you might have to create a new column, manually input the data e. Most of us are used to separating function arguments with commas. However, this does not work for everyone's Excel. The character you use to separate arguments depends on the List Separator set in your Regional Settings.

Comma is the default list separator in North America and some other countries. In European countries, comma is used as the decimal symbol and the list separator is usually set to semicolon. So, if your Excel formulas are not working because of " We found a problem with this formula And then, use exactly that character to separate arguments in your Excel formulas. When referring to other worksheets or workbooks that have spaces or non-alphabetical characters in their names, enclose the names in 'single quotation marks'.

For example,. For more information, please see How to refer to another sheet or workbook in Excel. If you are writing a formula that references a closed Excel workbook, your external reference must include the workbook name and entire path to the workbook.

For example:. For more information, please see Creating a reference to another workbook. If the above tips do not help, try to evaluate and debug each part of your formula individually by using the F9 key and other debugging techniques explained in the following tutorial: How to evaluate and debug formulas in Excel.

Excel formulas not updating Symptoms : The value returned by your Excel formula does not update automatically, i. Excel automatically removes these leading zeros as it considers these useless. For example, if you enter in a cell, Excel will change it to 1. In case you want to keep these leading zeros, use the steps above.

For example, suppose you have a dataset as shown below and I want to get the sum of all the visible cells in column C. And here is the problem — the formula in cell C12 still shows the same result — i. As I said, the formula is not giving the wrong result.

In fact, the SUM function is working just fine. SUM function can not account for the filtered data and give you the result for all the cells hidden or visible. Key takeaway — Understand the correct use and limitations of a function in Excel. These are some of the common causes that I have seen where your Excel formulas may not work or give unexpected or wrong results.

I am sure there are many more reasons for an Excel formula to not work or update. In case you know of any other reason maybe something that irks you often , let me know in the comments section.

Hi Sumit, I recognize these problems and have to deal with this a lot when I receive files or questions from other people. In most cases I can find the solution.

But I still have one very nasty problem, maybe you have a solution for this. I often have to use files with EAN-codes in it. With use of the correct barcode fonts I can make these codes readable for scanners. But the EAN-codes are automaticly transposed to Exponential values. Sumit, Regarding your REF!

Thank you for the great tutorials, Willie. Making the text color match the background color works but is problematic with striped rows. Any suggestions?
